PPTP Installation on Windows XP
PPTP isn't built into any Le VPN app - it's set up manually using the VPN client built into Windows XP. This guide walks you through it, plus what to use instead if you don't specifically need PPTP.
Don't specifically need PPTP? Use the Le VPN app instead
PPTP is an older protocol with known security weaknesses, and it isn't built into any Le VPN app - so manual setup is the only way to use it. For the best speed and security, use our new Windows app with Wireguard or Stealth Wireguard instead - simpler and more secure than any manual configuration. If you're on Windows XP for a specific reason (an old machine, limited hardware) and specifically want OpenVPN, our legacy Windows app supports that natively too, with a kill switch.
Still want PPTP specifically? That's fine - we keep supporting it for older devices, routers, or networks that only allow it. Just follow the manual steps below using Windows XP's built-in VPN client.
Manual PPTP Setup on Windows XP
Windows XP has a built-in PPTP client - no extra software needed. Follow these steps to set it up.
Create a new connection
Click Start, then Control Panel, then Network Connections (via Network and Internet Connections if shown). Click Create a new connection under Network Tasks, then Next. Select Connect to the network at my workplace, then Next, then choose Virtual Private Network connection.
Enter the server address
Type a name like "Le VPN" in the Company Name box, click Next. In the Host name field, enter your chosen server's hostname (e.g. uk.zeropointer.net, fr.zeropointer.net) - see the full server list. Click Next, choose My Use Only or Anyone's Use, then Finish.
Connect
Double-click the new connection's desktop shortcut, or click Start, then Connect To, and select it. Enter your VPN username and password, then click Connect.
Once connected, confirm it worked by checking your IP address - it should show the VPN server's location, not your own.
Finding your VPN credentials
