Le VPN via L2TP/IPSec on Chromebook

There's no dedicated Le VPN app for Chromebook, but ChromeOS has L2TP/IPSec support built right into its network settings. Here's how to set it up.
L2TP/IPSec setup on Chromebook

Manual L2TP/IPSec Setup on Chromebook

Configure a private network connection directly in ChromeOS settings.

1

Open network settings

Click the status area in the bottom-right corner of the screen and select Settings, then go to Network > Add connection > Add private network (labelled VPN on newer ChromeOS versions).

2

Fill in the connection details

Set Server hostname to your chosen server (e.g. fr.zeropointer.net for France), Service name to whatever label you like (e.g. "Le VPN France"), and Provider type to L2TP/IPSec with pre-shared key.

3

Enter the pre-shared key and credentials

Set Pre-shared key to levpnsecret, then enter your VPN username and password. Check Save identity and password if you'd like ChromeOS to remember them, then click Connect.

To disconnect

Open the network settings panel again, select your private network connection, and click Disconnect.

Once connected, confirm it worked by checking your IP address - it should show the VPN server's location, not your own. If it still shows your real IP, disconnect and reconnect.

Quick recap

This guide shows how to connect Le VPN on a Chromebook using L2TP/IPSec, configured entirely in ChromeOS's built-in network settings since there is no dedicated Le VPN app for Chromebook. It is a one-time settings setup with no software to install.

  • Platform and protocol: L2TP/IPSec on Chromebook (ChromeOS), using built-in network settings
  • Steps: add a private network / VPN, choose L2TP/IPSec with pre-shared key, then enter details
  • Set the server hostname (e.g. fr.zeropointer.net) and pre-shared key levpnsecret
