Half the Population of Turkey Exposed to ID Fraud

Almost 50million Turkish personal details have been posted online to a server in Romania as half the population of Turkey exposed to ID fraud. This of course puts all of these citizens at risk of identity theft, data hacks and privacy violations. It is not known who is behind the leaks as no one has claimed responsibility yet, although a message was left as an introduction. The message stated that “Who would have imagined that backwards ideologies and rising religious extremism in Turkey would lead to a crumbling and vulnerable technical infrastructure?”.

The database is said to include the personal details of half of the country, which contains national ID numbers used for access to a range of government services such as voting, taxation and education. In addition to the ID numbers, details including names, addresses, date of births and many other forms of identification have also been released. This of course sets these people up for potential ID fraud scenarios. One suspect who may admit responsibility would be Anonymous after they have on numerous occasions spoken out against the Turkish government.

Along with the leaked database, more messages are included stating how easy it was to steal the information and how relaxed the security for its citizens were. The anonymous poster also goes on to criticise the current Turkish government, in particular the current president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The hacker also goes on to criticise the USA and warning if Trump is elected.

The trail of potential destruction through this database of ID numbers and personal information is endless, where criminals could use what information they have presently to gain access to even more data, eventually leading to bank accounts etc.
