Europol & Interpol launched their first cybercrime conference

Europol and Interpol just had their first joint conference on cybercrime, so as to strengthen international cooperation to address current and future challenges in the cybersecurity.

Over 250 professionals attended the 2-day conference in Europol headquarters in The Hague. Participants from 42 countries, representing more than 80 different organizations, either representatives of the authorities in charge of law enforcement, professionals from NGOs related to cybersecurity or representing the private sector and universities.

Internet facilitates the daily lives people, but also involves the emergence of new types of cybercrime. International experts have also said in the Europol – Interpol conference on cybercrime that the lack of law enforcement at the international level is a major challenge in the fight against cybercrime.

“We do face the challenges posed by the rapid evolution of the Internet. More than 24 billion devices will soon be connected to the Internet 24hours a day and 7 days a week. This represents huge amounts of data produced and shared by computers, tablets and mobile phones. These data include information on our behavior as well as on our location, health, research on the Internet, etc… “said Troels Oerting , director of the European Centre for the fight against cybercrime.

According to Mr. Oerting , most Internet users are not sufficiently informed about how to protect their devices against cybercrime. In addition, cybercriminals act internationally, i.e. beyond any border and any legislation. “One of the major problems in the fight against cybercrime is related to the fact that the legislation varies from one country to another. Criminals commit their crimes in one country without being there physically. Therefore, it is essential to develop cooperation between countries and international law if we want to effectively fight against cybercrime, “said Xinhua executive director of Interpol, Noboru Nakatani.

Rob Wainwright, Director of Europol, commented: “Cybercrime is the best example of the globalization of crime, which is why it is so important that national units fight against cybercrime using the services we offer.”

Noboru Nakatani, Executive Director of Interpol Global Complex for Innovation (CMII) , said: “Cybercrime is a truly transnational crime, it requires  global solutions as no nation or no international organization can solve this problem on its own. We need a global alliance to fight against cybercrime.”

Many experts feel we must truly develop cooperation and international law to anticipate what will be the future. To date, existing laws in many countries are not suited to fight against cybercrime and criminals are increasingly operating on the Internet, exploiting the place where the proceedings are less stringent and using the fact that internet makes it difficult for them to be identified.

This annual conference on Interpol Europol Cybercrime will be held alternately in The Hague and Singapore, where the new CMII complex is currently under construction.
