PPTP Installation on Linux
There's no dedicated Le VPN app for Linux. If you need PPTP specifically - for an older setup or a network restriction - here's how to configure it manually through Network Manager.
No dedicated Le VPN app for Linux
Le VPN doesn't offer a native Linux app, and PPTP is a manual-setup-only protocol on every platform - it isn't built into any Le VPN app. We still support PPTP for users who need it (older devices, specific network requirements), but it's worth knowing that OpenVPN is the more secure, actively recommended option if your setup allows for it.
If you also use Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS, the Le VPN app is available for those platforms.
Manual PPTP Setup on Linux
These steps use Network Manager's built-in PPTP support, available on Ubuntu and most other distributions with a desktop environment.
Install the PPTP plugin
Open a terminal and run sudo apt install network-manager-pptp network-manager-pptp-gnome (on Debian/Ubuntu-based systems), then restart Network Manager or reboot.
Add a new VPN connection
Open your Network Connections / Settings > Network panel, click Add, and choose Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) as the connection type.
Enter server and credentials
Set Gateway to your chosen server address (e.g. fr.zeropointer.net for France), enter your VPN username and password, then click Advanced and enable Use Point-to-Point encryption (MPPE).
DNS setting (recommended)
Under the connection's IPv4 Settings tab, add 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 in the Additional DNS servers field. This keeps DNS lookups from leaking to your ISP once you're connected. Click Apply to save.
To connect, click the Network Manager icon in your panel, expand VPN Connections, and select the connection you created. Once connected, confirm it worked by checking your IP address - it should show the VPN server's location, not your own.
Finding your VPN credentials
VPN connection credentials
Used to connect via PPTP on Linux. Sent to your email when you activated your account - not the same as your client area login. Forgot them? Log into the client area and use the menu to view or reset your VPN password.
Client area login
